Vicodin addiction is a serious disease
from which millions of Americans suffer. Vicodin addiction
can be defined as compulsive use of the mood-altering
medication that has not been authorized by a medical
provider. Characterized by a continued craving for drugs,
vicodin addiction can cause addicts to need these drugs
for psychological effects or mood alterations.
Many vicodin addicts begin innocently,
by taking vicodin as prescribed by their physicians.
Because it produces euphoria, relaxation and relief
from pain, vidocin is the "drug of choice"
for many prescription drug addicts. Vicodin is also
commonly prescribed for a number of different kinds
of pain, so some addicts might find vicodin easier to
obtain.
Unfortunately, vicodin addicts cannot
stop taking these drugs once the medical condition has
been alleviated, finding they need to use drugs to feel
"normal." The addict then exhibits drug-seeking
behavior, often becoming preoccupied with using and
obtaining vicodin, through legal or illegal channels.
Some people might think vicodin addiction
is less serious than alcoholism or street drug addiction.
Unfortunately, vicodin addiction is just as much of
a problem as abusing drugs or alcohol. Like alcoholism
and drug addiction, vicodin addiction is a disease that
must be treated by a medical professional and a drug
rehab center or if needed, an executive drug rehab center.
When the body intakes vicodin, the
brain stops making some of the chemicals it makes naturally,
such as dopamine and endorphins. The brain then becomes
dependent on the outside source of vicodin for the chemicals
it is no longer making. If the addict no longer takes
vicodin, the dependent person goes into withdrawal because
the body is no longer receiving the outside source of
the chemical it has grown to expect.
Those with vicodin addiction can
experience cravings for vicodin that are as strong as
the need for food or water. Vicodin addiction can cause
people to continue to take drugs, despite serious family,
health or legal problems. Vicodin addiction can take
over your whole life, causing the need for drugs to
become overwhelming and undeniable. There might be times
when even though you know it is inappropriate, you still
want and need to take vicodin.
Vicodin addiction is serious and
requires serious treatment. Most people understand that
vicodin addiction is a disease, but few truly appreciate
that vicodin addiction is not "curable." If
you are addicted to vicodin, you will remain addicted
for the rest of your life. Although you will need to
accept that vicodin addiction is a permanent condition,
you can do something about it.
Vicodin addiction can be difficult
to remedy alone. To become free from vicodin addition,
you need treatment, counseling and outside help. Treatment
Referral provides referrals to programs that effectively
treat alcoholism, drug and substance abuse, addressing
the behavior and thinking patterns that directly contribute
to the individual's disease and ensuring patients have
a meaningful recovery.
